Job Summary
The Green Business Development Specialist will support the implementation of the Dutch Fund for Climate and
Development in Uganda. Through the DFCD- a green financial solution, the specialist will identify, assess, and lead
investments in businesses that meet the DFCD mandate and eligibility, with a prime focus on addressing climate
adaptation and mitigation, shifting assets toward a green economy. This includes evaluating new investment
opportunities, conducting due diligence, and recommending investments that align with climate impact priorities while
delivering financial returns.
The specialist will focus on developing, with the support from the DFCD East Africa Regional Lead, financially viable,
bankable projects with positive environmental, social, and climate impacts, supporting WWF Uganda’s mission to catalyze
sustainable finance flows that benefit people and nature. These projects should be scalable, show a strong history of
revenue generation, and raise >$5M in long-term finance.
In this regard, the Green Business Development Specialist will;
Lead the identification, origination, and development of bankable nature-based projects in Uganda, in close
coordination with the DFCD Regional Lead for East Africa and Africa;
• Consolidate ongoing efforts, deepen engagements with local communities, stakeholders, and utilize established
networks to identify new projects.
• Evaluate economic feasibility and provide advice to proponents of new bankable projects.
• Ensure project alignment with DFCD’s landscape approach, integrating climate, biodiversity, and community
priorities within targeted regions.
• Structure the project, support the due diligence activities, and ensure smooth contracting of new projects.
• Ensure that the contracted project implementer successfully implements the agreed workplan, flag any
potential issue, share success stories and where possible support graduation of the project to investors.
• Capacity-building of private sector and civil society partners to build long-term pipeline and proposal stream for
DFCD.
• Maintain an up-to-date pipeline of project opportunities on Monday.com, ensuring consistent data for
coordination, reporting, and investor engagement.
• Ensure DFCD and WWF-Uganda team alignment and engagement across the project lifecycle, by keeping
colleagues informed, coordinating internal support, and facilitating smooth collaboration to deliver on
commitments made to each project.
Capacity Building and Stakeholder Engagement;
• Collaborate closely with WWF Uganda colleagues working on landscape management, green finance, and climate
adaptation to ensure alignment of DFCD-supported activities.
• Integrate DFCD learnings and findings into the WWF Uganda landscape/area-based vision and planning processes
to strengthen long-term impact
• Support inclusive community engagement within target landscapes, working alongside the WWF Uganda team,
and regional DFCD team, to ensuring that project developers implement meaningful, participatory engagement
processes in line with DFCD and ESSF standards.
National Risk and Opportunity Review, and mainstreaming adaptation finance;
• Conduct national-level scoping of climate adaptation initiatives by mapping existing and potential projects
relevant to DFCD’s mandate.
• Conducting and/or review existing risk and vulnerability assessments and help Lead or support the review of
existing risk and vulnerability assessments and build WWF Uganda’s internal capacity to mainstream climate
adaptation and financial mechanisms into organizational and landscape-level strategies.
• Identify high-priority sectors, entry points, and emerging opportunities for DFCD funding.
• Engage local subject matter experts in the fields of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), Biodiversity and
Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) to grasp the status of each of these topics in Uganda and the relevant
landscape and identify key environmental and social risks.
• Facilitate co-development of climate change adaptation projects with partners, ensuring they reflect local needs
and financial viability.
Monitoring, reporting and policy influence;
• Monitor the implementation of DFCD-supported projects, documenting key progress, challenges, and
adaptations in coordination with partners.
• Document key lessons for influencing planning and decision making by government, and other parties,
particularly around climate finance, bankable nature solutions, and inclusive conservation. Prepare progress
report for submission to donors, the DFCD consortium and WWF internal stakeholders, in line with agreed
reporting formats and cycles. submitted to donors and WWF
Qualifications
• A Master’s degree in Climate finance, Finance, Economics, Agricultural Economics, Business Administration or a
related field
Experience & Competencies
• At least 5 years’ experience in finance (sustainable finance, investment banking, impact investing, asset
management, private equity etc.)
• Should understand the early-stage investment process with fluency in key technical competencies: pro-forma
financial statements, term sheets; returns analysis, investment documentation, capitalization tables, and standard
investment processes.
• Has a good understanding of climate change risks, vulnerability, and resilience-building.
• Strong analytical and strategic capability
• Experienced in Project management and stakeholder engagement
• Fluent in English with good oral and written communication skills.
