Emergency
About Company
EMERGENCY was founded in Milan, Italy, in 1994.
It was recognised as an NGO in 1999 and as an official partner of the UN Department of Public Information in 2006.
Since 2015, we have been part of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as an Associate with Special Consultative Status.
Since January 2018, we have been an official partner of EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid (ECHO).
In November 2020, the EU Humanitarian Partnership Certificate was awarded to EMERGENCY as a result of the positive assessment of the partnership application to the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operation (ECHO).
With this certificate, EMERGENCY is considered suitable to apply for EU funding for the implementation of humanitarian aid activities.
Sustainability
Everywhere we operate, we promote and implement a model of sustainable healthcare.
Our work is made possible by hundreds of thousands of people who choose to participate because they believe in what we do, and in the principles and values that guide the organisation: independence, impartiality, humanity and neutrality.
What does it mean to be sustainable?
In all our projects, we collaborate with local authorities to define activities and training programmes for local staff. Our aim is to contribute to the growth and sustainability of national health systems, not to replace them. It is essential that governments not only share the objectives of but also support hospitals, including financially, to ensure effective hand-over in the future.
Sustainability means offering free, high-quality healthcare to victims of war, landmines and poverty by carrying out long-term projects. It means training local staff in the countries where we work until local authorities are able to manage and coordinate medical infrastructure and facilities and make EMERGENCY redundant.
Sustainability must always be tied up with other words, like equality, dignity, social responsibility, awareness and participation. This is, for us, what it means be sustainable.
